Urdu readers are blessed with many excellent translations of the Quran, each the work of a dedicated scholar. All of them are good; they differ mainly in style. Some stay close to the Arabic word order, so you can follow the original word by word. Others write natural Urdu prose, so the meaning reads smoothly. Some add short explanations in brackets. This guide introduces the 13 Urdu translations on IslamOne and shows the same ayah in several of them, so you can find the style that suits you.
You can read every surah of the Quran in any of these translations, side by side, at islamone.app/quran. The full list is at Quran translations.
Literal or idiomatic: the main difference
Urdu translations fall roughly into two styles.
- Literal (lafzi): follows the Arabic closely, phrase by phrase. Good when you are learning Arabic or want to see what each part of the ayah says. Urdu can sound less natural.
- Idiomatic (bamuhawara): puts the meaning into natural Urdu sentences. Easier to read for long stretches, but the translator's understanding shapes the wording more.
Many translators sit between the two, and several add words in brackets ( ) to show what is implied but not written in the Arabic. Both styles serve the reader well, and many people enjoy reading one of each side by side.
One ayah, many translations: Ayatul Kursi (2:255)
Comparing translations on one ayah shows their style better than any description. Here is Ayatul Kursi, the "Verse of the Throne", in six of them.

Fateh Muhammad Jalandhari

Tafheem-ul-Quran (Syed Abul Ala Maududi)

Irfan-ul-Quran (Tahir-ul-Qadri)
Muhammad Junagarhi

How to choose
- New to reading the Quran in Urdu: start with a modern, easy translation such as Aasan Tarjuma (Taqi Usmani) or Jalandhari.
- Want to follow the Arabic closely: choose a literal translation such as Kanzul Iman or Junagarhi, and turn on word-by-word meanings in IslamOne's settings.
- Want to understand the flow and message: an idiomatic translation like Maududi's reads more like a book.
- Studying seriously: read two translations of different styles side by side, and open the tafseer where they differ.
- Want a personal recommendation: ask a scholar or teacher you trust which translation they suggest.
On IslamOne you can show several translations under each ayah at once: open any surah, then choose translations in the reader's display settings, or use "Read the Quran with this translation" on a translation's page.
English translations
IslamOne also has 10 English translations, including Saheeh International, Muhammad Taqi Usmani, Maududi (The Meaning of the Quran), Pickthall and Abdullah Yusuf Ali. See all translations.
